Since the first Westward Program aimed at training for renal physician was successfully conducted in July 2017 by Nanfang Hospital and National Clinical Research Center for Kidney Disease , many primary hospitals have applied for the class reopen again. According to numerous application and highly praise from the former trainee. On October 17, under their expectation, the second Westward Training Class for kidney physicians of county-level hospitals was held in the Nephrology Department of Nanfang Hospital, with physicians from 26 key cities and counties from Shaanxi, Anhui, Henan, Hubei, Jiangxi and Guangdong province attended the training.
The opening ceremony was hosted by Wang Guobao, Deputy Director of the Nephrology Department. Professor Hou Fanfan, Director of the Nephrology Department and Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, addressed the welcoming speech. Twenty-five district-level Directors of the Nephrology Department and professors from Guangdong, Fujian, Guizhou, Jiangsu and Zhejiang provinces attended the meeting, along with all the clinicians, pathologists and nurses. Professor Hou Fanfan attached great importance to the training class, selecting teaching topics and specific courses, and preceded a questionnaire survey on teaching results. The training class has diverse forms, including seminars, teaching ward rounds, case sharing and discussion, practical demonstration, clinical pathology, involving chronic kidney disease prevention and treatment, diagnose of acute kidney injury, primary glomerular disease, secondary kidney disease, blood purification, peritoneal dialysis (PD) and other sub-professional renal medicine. All theoretical major classes were prepared and taught by senior professors of Nephrology Department, which was full of interactive discussion with students in warm and harmonious atmosphere. Teaching is an activity which benefits teachers as well as students. The trainees also took part in general practice of intractable case and ward rounds. Professors analyzed clinical diagnosis and thinking and methods of treatment through specific intractable and critical cases with their specialized knowledge. All these activities was highly remarked by the trainees. During the training, trainees also took time to visit the Blood Purification Center, Peritoneal Dialysis Center, and National Clinical Research Center for Kidney Disease and State Key Laboratory of Organ Failure Research. They also conducted in-depth exchanges with professors engaged in renal basic research to know about the disease.
The training class came to an end on October 20. Professor Zhang Xun, a famous expert of more than 60 years experiences, presided over the closing ceremony and presented course - completion certificates to the students. In his closing speech, Prof Zhang Xun hoped participants would strive to become a renal physician with extensive medical knowledge, and strive to become the technical backbone of the primary hospital. This showed the earnest expectation of a "senior doctor" on grassroots counterparts and young people. Students said the class not only gave them knowledge, broadened their horizons and widen their thinking, but also set up a bridge of case consultation and talent training between the primary hospitals and Nanfang Hospital. Through these kind of activities, the Nephrology Department of Nanfang Hospital and National Clinical Research Center for Kidney Disease demonstrated its comprehensive strength on clinical, pathological and scientific research of and further enhanced its domestic influence.
