Prof. Xun Zhang is the founding chief of the division and has been receiving Special Allowance for outstanding experts from the State Council of China since 1992.
Prof. Zhang received his MD degree at Peking Union Medical College in 1957. He is one of the pioneers of modern nephrology in China. In 1964, he succeeded in applying peritoneal dialysis to treat acute kidney failure with hyperkalemia for the first time. From 1970, Prof. Zhang began to focus on hemodialysis and thereafter explored, improved and brought several novel techniques into clinical practice. With these techniques, he established the Division of Nephrology at Nanfang Hospital.
Prof. Zhang has published more than 100 scientific papers and has edited and co-edited 13 books. He is a former Standing Committee member of the Chinese Society of Nephrology, former senior editor of the Chinese Journal of Nephrology. He has won three times the National Award for Advances in Science and Technology issued by the State Council of China and be awarded as the excellent doctor in Yangcheng (Guangzhou) in 2017.
